Our database has been restored and all systems are ready to go! WHEW!

[ November 21, 2002 - 11:01 am PST ]

A quick update: There is a light at the end of the tunnel. The restoration should be complete today, and then it's just a matter of rebuilding the indexes (database indexes help speed up access to the data, without them most backflip operations would take HOURS because of the amount of data involved). Keep your fingers crossed folks!

Just an update, the reason why our restore failed over the weekend is because of a file system problem we've identified since the last update here. We have fixed the file system. We have a clean database now and are applying the changes between the backup version and the state of the database the day it got corrupted. Once this process is completed, we will still have to rebuild database indexes, which will take at least 24 hours. So at this time, we're still days away from being back up. As everyday (in some cases, every hour) users of Backflip, we share your pain.

We have received tons of encouraging emails and we thank you. For those of you asking if we can send you your bookmarks, unfortunately we can't. Everything is stored in the database we are restoring.

[ November 18, 2002 - midnight PST ]

We were so close. Some of you may have noticed the site was up briefly today. Unfortunately, as soon as all the traffic hit the database it crashed again. We unfortunately have to keep the site down longer. We have a different plan of attack now that requires a lot of computer crunching time. Translation: you, our loyal users, have to wait longer. I cannot express how sorry we are that we don't have the system back up yet.

Just wanted to drop a note saying, yes, we are still working on the database recovery. Because of the amount of data in the Backflip database, it's taking a very long time to do the restore. There is nothing we can do to speed this up. Our database engineer is estimating that unless we run into any new problems, we should be operational by Monday (November 18) morning (PST).

We wish we could have good news for you tonight, however, the plot thickens. To rebuild the database we are going to have to do a lot of time consuming tasks. It may be a few days still before backflip is available again. Appologies is all we can offer right now, and patience all we can ask.

[ November 12, 2002 - 9:44am PST ]

Our database server's filesystem has experienced a corruption which is causing everyone's account to generate internal errors. Those of you who saw many of your folder's missing, not to worry. Once we find the offending block of data, your data will be restored. At the absolute worst case, we will have to go to a backup of the database. Our database engineer is looking at the problem now. ETA for resolution is [ update as of November 13, 2002 - 2:22am PST] end of day Wednesday at this point. We apologize for the inconvenience. The problem is much more complicated than we initially thought.
